Excessive neutrophil activation and systemic inflammation can be evaluated by the blood concentration of specific enzyme such as MPO and ELT or several cytokines (IL1, TNFa, IL6, ….). A systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) is clearly associated to laminitis and sepsis.
A mitochondrial dysfunction is probably implicated in equine metabolic syndrome, cushing syndrome and several myopathies.
